SHE Software: Who are you?

Jenni: "My name is Jenni Pendrey, I’m head of safety performance for National Express, bus and coach."

"Although the brand National Express has been around for years, the bus and coach business has only really been in place for the last year and a half."

SHE Software: How did you manage safety?

Jenni: "In the bus side of the business, we had nothing like it. We had a bespoke database made for our company, but to be honest it didn’t really suit the needs, of particularly large use of access, that was a problem. It required a lot of maintenance, and every time there was an issue, we had to get somebody individually to look at it."

"It wasn't really something that we managed from a central point of view historically so each location had their own spreadsheets of incidents and accidents. We had paper files for risk assessments and safe systems of work, so it was quite intense, paper heavy."

SHE Software: Why change?

Jenni: "When the integration process took place and bus and coach came together as two business units, it had proved itself on the coach side of the business in terms of allowing everybody to take their own responsibilities for health and safety, because that was also one of the issues from bus that we had a central department. So it was something that had worked well on the coach side of the business and we looked to role that out and get the benefits on a wider scale across the whole bus and coach and also to get a consistent approach because we’d got two systems and had to bring them together somehow."

SHE Software: How have things improved?

Jenni: "Historically there was a lot of time used in photocopying reports, posting them out and managing post logs. Whereas we can now we can just run off a report and email them straight over to our claims handlers (our insurers). It may take more time to input than a spreadsheet may have done historically, in terms of the usefulness of once it is on the system it saves time for us."

"It acts as a very good prompt to be able to follow through the separate modules and follow through the fields and to make sure there is a proper review of incidents, which In the long run is bound to prevent future accidents from occurring and historically we didn’t have a very good system for making sure that was happening, whereas now we can relate everything right back to the actual incident causes and do something about preventing them from occurring."

"It also now means we can access the site remotely, which is really useful, especially because we’ve got an increasing amount of home workers and people going out remotely to sites as well. It means they can get on from their laptops wherever they are, if they’re on trains and those sorts of things, it’s really useful for them to be able to go on and catch up on reports and incidents that have happened."

SHE Software: Summarise your experience of SHE?

Jenni: "It is certainly user friendly. Really good for analysis. Pretty, it looks nice."
